saw... [although] he had but one eye; it was more
properly a brilliant star, it shone like Venus.' This is Robert
Hall's description of Christmas Evans (1766-1838), the
giant of all Welsh preachers.
When he was nine his shoemaker father died, and he
was left for six years in the care of a hard, cruel uncle,
who was a selfish drunkard.  Without friend or home, with
no religious training, or anyone to care for his heart or
morals he was surrounded by the worst of examples. At
the age of seventeen he could not read or write, and
prospects for his future looked hopeless.
His many close calls with death made it appear that the
devil was determined to destroy him, body and soul...
Following his conversion, a group of his former
companions waylaid him at night and beat him
unmercifully.  One of them struck him on the brow with a
stick, resulting in the loss of one eye...
Of his early education after his conversion, Evans writes:
'Scarcely one person out of ten could...read at all... We
bought Bibles and candles, and were accustom to meet
together in the evening, in the barn...and thus in about
one month I was able to read the Bible in my mother
tongue...
On Christmas day, his birthday, at the age of 26 he
responded to a 'providential intimation' a call to serve ten
Baptist societies on the island of Anglesey.
Most of his work was out door preaching because of the
great congregations he attracted wherever he went.
During revivals he usually preached SEVENTEEN TIMES A
WEEK-- five times on Sunday and two times a day during
the week.  At the height of his fame, no chapel in Wales
was large enough to hold the thousands that gathered on
the hillsides, and many followed him from village to village
for weeks..."       Master Preachers Harold Calkins p. 17-19
